At Grafe Auction, we often hear from business owners asking about sales tax and tax exemption. We know tax matters can seem complex, so we want to make it as simple as possible for you to understand how it all works when you're bidding with us.

Let's Talk Sales Tax

When you buy items at our auctions, we're required to collect state and local sales tax - it's just part of doing business. But if you run a business that qualifies for tax exemption, we can help you avoid those extra charges. You'll just need to share your official tax exemption certificate with us first.

What's a Tax Exemption Certificate?

Think of a tax exemption certificate as your official "pass" to buy items without paying sales tax. Your state government issues these certificates to certain types of businesses and organizations, including:

  • Nonprofit organizations serving their communities
  • Government agencies at various levels
  • Manufacturers buying materials for production
  • Businesses purchasing items they plan to resell

Each state handles these certificates differently, so what works in Minnesota might not work in Wisconsin. If you're not sure whether your business qualifies, we recommend checking with your state's revenue department.

Making Tax Exemption Work for You

We've made submitting your certificate straightforward:

Just send your valid certificate to info@grafeauction.com before you start bidding. Our team will review it and update your account. After that, you won't see sales tax charges on qualifying purchases - it's that simple!

Pro Tip: Put a reminder on your calendar for when your certificate expires. Keeping your documentation current helps you avoid any surprise tax charges down the road.

A Note About State Requirements

Your tax exemption needs to match where you're buying. For example, if you're bidding on items from our Minnesota auction but you're based in Wisconsin, make sure you have the right documentation for Minnesota. While some states accept multi-state certificates, others require their own specific forms. Not sure which you need? Our team can point you in the right direction.

We also accept the Streamlined Sales Tax certificate and Multi-state Tax Commission uniform certificate for out-of-state buyers when applicable. Just remember - the certificate needs to be complete, current, and signed for us to honor it.

Pro Tips for Tax-Exempt Buyers

  • Mark your calendar for certificate expiration dates to avoid surprise tax charges
  • Keep copies of all submitted certificates and auction receipts for your records - this documentation proves invaluable during tax audits
  • Submit your documentation early - waiting until after winning bids makes the process more complicated
  • Ask our team if you're unsure which certificate your state requires
